In August 2024, a court ruled that Google held a monopoly in the search engine business. Although Google has appealed the verdict, the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) is seeking penalties, including a 10-year ban on releasing any browser product or spinning off Chrome. The DOJ has enlisted competitors like Perplexity, Microsoft, and OpenAI to assist in the case. ChatGPT’s head of product and Perplexity’s Chief Business Officer Dmitry Shevelenko have been asked to testify, though it remains unclear if Shevelenko will comply.
